Instructor Spotlight: Dimitrius Adams

Dimitrius currently teaches on Saturdays at 10am - Dance AusTONE Fit and 12:15pm Hip Hop Basics!

1. When did you start dancing?

I started dancing at 16. I was fortunate that my high school offered it as an elective. I went in thinking I'd just learn hip hop, but my instructor made us learn ballet, jazz, modern, and how to choreograph along with hip hop. I still visit once a year to go teach a class and talk about my experience as a student. 2. What is your favorite thing to do in Austin?

EAT! I love to eat and Austin's food scene has grown so much so quickly it's hard to keep up. Dinner with good friends and laughs are the best. 3. Hometown?

I was born in California, I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but I consider Austin my hometown, to be honest. It's where I grew up the most. 4. Who is your inspiration?

Too many to list. A couple (for various reasons) include CL of 2NE1, Ellen Degeneres, Anthony Bourdain, Joan Crawford, and my good friend Kari Burke. 5. What are some of your non-dancing hobbies?

Recording arts. I enjoy writing, singing, recording a record. My favorite is to make videos, though. It's where I get to take something that's very real (the song) and create a fantasy interpretation that I see as art. 6. What is your favorite dance-related experience?

Performing at Dance To Breathe with the debut of Bomb Squad. I've never heard so many people screaming in approval at once. I was doing something I love with people I love. It was a high that I will continue to chase in my recording career. 7. Favorite Show/Movie/Book: TV Show: At the moment, I just finished watching FEUD by Ryan Murphy. I've known about the rivalry between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford for years and they're both Hollywood legends. Not only were the performances on the show superb, but Ryan Murphy did such a great job humanizing these icons, showing the struggle of an artist, as well as the agism, sexism, and overall corruption of Hollywood. 8. Fun fact about you? I'm extremely goofy. Disregard my social media presence (which is very serious.) It's a persona. It's one aspect of my personality. I like to laugh and do things that other people wouldn't do in public and even while I teach class.

9. You are taking a dance class - what style can we find you in first?

Street Jazz. 10. Favorite Quote and why?

"There's no such thing as good or evil. Thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare

I grew up Catholic, and in my adult years have spent a large amount of time studying religion. What I found most heartbreaking is how many try to put their followers into a box. If you step outside the box, you deserve to be punished. By simply being me, I couldn't get into the box if I tried. It never made sense to me. At the end of the day, my intentions are to lift peoples spirits, to inspire, and to be kind. Most of the time, it's about perspective. I believe that most people are doing what they think is best. If I don't agree with it, it doesn't matter, especially if it doesn't effect me.

I believe that most people are doing what they think is best and it's not their intention to hurt others. Get over yourself because it's probably not about you.
