I'm sure this face is already familiar to you if you've ever stepped foot inside of Dance Austin Studio. Chances are this is the main beautiful & friendly face that will greet you! Meet Alexis!
1. When did you start dancing?
I’ve been dancing since a very young age. My mom says I would stand in front of the T.V. and mimic what I saw. I’m self taught and I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember. I didn’t really start any formal training until I was in college.
2. What is your favorite thing to do in Austin?
Austin is full of Live Music, and it’s one of the many things that attracted me to this city. I try to go to a concert at least once a month as well as the many music festivals Austin hosts annually.
Hidalgo, Texas is where I was raised. A very small border town at the very tip of texas. The Rio Grande Valley is what some of you might know it by. Not much to do out there, but drive out 45 minutes to go to the beach (South Padre Island).
4. Who is your inspiration?
I grew up in a household of Independent women and they are my inspiration for everything in life. I learned at a very young age what it meant to be strong, self sufficient, and goal driven thanks to them. No matter how tough life would get, they managed to stay positive and supportive of each other. They helped mold the young adult I am today.
5. What are some of your non-dancing hobbies?
I like going to plays, kayaking, playing retro games, reading poetry, and binge watching shows on Netflix!
6. What is your favorite dance-related experience?
Anytime I get to perform, the adrenaline you get is an indescribable experience. All the nerves kick in at the same time and put you on overdrive. It all happens in the blink of an eye. You close your eyes and hear the slow growing claps and as you open your eyes and take a breathe, this overwhelming happiness just takes over your body. It’s almost like an out of body experience and it’s my favorite thing about dancing. I get to put my emotion and heart into my movement, and anything that made me upset or stressed before, just vanishes. Almost like you are reborn!
7. Favorite Show/Movie/Book:
TV Show: American Horror Story
Book: The Sun and Her Flowers
8. Fun fact about you?
Fun fact is that I cannot whistle! I’ve tried every trick and nothing works. I will never be able to whistle, and I’ve accepted that.
9. You are taking a dance class - what style can we find you in first?
Hip Hop! Always Hip Hop! It’s my first love. It can be hard hitting, soft/ smooth, groovy/funky, or sassy/sexy. It helps bring out my personality if you don’t really know me.
10. Favorite Quote and why?
"Talent is God-given, be humble." -Harvey Mackay
I feel like everyone has their own special quirk or something they excel in naturally in life. Not everyone can be a musician, or a star athlete, or have the abilities to solve a math problem in less than 10 seconds. If the universe granted you this special talent, you should treat it as such. Although we all are different, we are all equal and should remember to treat everyone as such. You are not greater than someone because you acquire a skill they don’t. In return you should use those talents to help others as a thank you to the universe for choosing to give it to you.
