FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: How should I prepare for my first class?
A: Just bring yourself, your friends, and the desire to learn and have fun. Most people come in comfortable workout wear. If you don’t have anything appropriate, you can check out Dance Austin’s line of FIT GEAR. Regardless, it's a dance class, so you should be comfortable! Sneakers are appropriate to wear in our hip hop or fitness classes, but make it difficult to turn or move your feet in our technical classes.
Q: Are you a beginner or just looking for a workout that offers amazing health benefits?
A: Well it's time to dance your way into fun and fitness! Dance is an exciting alternative to the traditional exercise routine. Dance can burn over 60 calories for every 10 minutes you are getting your groove on. So if you hate the Stair Master or if you would rather do your taxes than lift weights, check out our sensational variety of dance classes. Whatever your experience or ability, come join us to experience the invigorating effects of dance. Even if you think you have two left feet, our highly qualified staff will replace one of them with a good right foot ... in no time at all you'll be dancing like you've been doing it forever.
Q: Will I be the only student who is a beginner and never danced?
A: No, not by a long shot! You will also be surrounded by other beginning students; whom like yourself, have never danced before or haven’t danced in a long time.
Q: I haven't danced or taken a class for many years. Is there a class for me?
A: Yes, we offer a variety of classes just for you! If you’re new to dance or if it’s been a while, we suggest that you begin by taking an ALL level or BEGINNING/BASIC level class. Once your mind and body become familiar with the movements and the terminology, you will be ready to jump into a more intermediate class. It's never too late to start, jump in!
Q: The class seems difficult, what should I do?
A: Remember, don't give up after the first class or your first week! When you attend your first dance class, you have already won half the battle of learning to dance. You have made it this far, you are in class! Even if your first class or week doesn't go quite how you expected, give yourself time and you will be surprised how quickly you get the hang of it. Remember, don't be self-conscious and don't panic, our instructors are here to help.
Q: I'm an Intermediate/Advanced dancer, what about me?
A: First off, congratulations! You made the jump to the next level, and we know it's not easy. We do have a few classes catered to those who need an extra challenge. Check out our Intermediate classes, and of course, attend our Master Classes when we bring in choreographers from around the country. If you’re still needing an extra challenge, talk with your favorite instructor about private lessons.
Q: Are you a Professional Dancer looking to develop your technical skills?
A: We provide professional, quality training for a variety of students. We do offer intermediate level classes to accommodate professionals wanting to sharpen their skills. If you find yourself needing more of a challenge, our highly qualified staff may be able to help you with private lessons.
Q: How long will it take me to progress from one level to the next?
A: Progression varies from student to student and really depends on the individual and how often you attend class. Dancing is a physical skill so it does take repetition to improve. We ultimately will let you be the judge, however we suggest talking with your instructor for feedback on your decision.
Q: How do I know which class or level to take?
A: If you are unsure, please speak with our Dance Advisor prior to taking them and she can give you a recommendation. If it is your first time at the studio, we recommend taking a level that is lower for the following reasons; you may be unfamiliar with a teacher's style, classes may be harder than what you are accustomed to, and you might want to acclimate yourself to new surroundings. If you haven't danced in many years, you'll want to reintroduce your body and muscles slowly.
Q: Can I observe a class before I take?
A: Sorry, you may not stand in the studio and watch. However, there are clips on our youtube channel and instagram that will give you an idea of the class style.
Q: Can I video tape a class?
A: No, you may not video or photograph any classes without the instructor’s permission. Still cameras, videos and audio recorders are not permitted inside the studios. If ever you notice a camera and are uncomfortable, please notify Dance Austin Staff immediately.
